I Hate Scales

I Hate Scales

So, I’ve been off dialysis for about five months now (blessed be my kidneys, for they still work!) and had two doctor’s visits with my nephrologist and cardiologist. Both of these worthies have been please with my progress, especially the kidney doctor, as rebound diuresis seems to be a fairly rare occurrence.

My blood work is pretty good, except for my stubbornly hard-to-control glucose levels, and those darned triglycerides. More aggressive dieting, more frequent glucose testing, and a new prescription for Crestor (and some fish oil capsules), added to an increase in my daily walks to 3 miles, should bring those down presently.

But what’s really pissing me off and making me hate scales (the weight kind, not the fish kind) is that I’ve gained 10 kilos in the past five months. That’s about 22 pounds of water.

And it’s showing in my ankles and lower legs, darn it. Ugly swelling, tired feelings and out-of-breathness.

I WILL NOT go back into the hospital or onto dialysis. Although on the Big D front, I think that’s still avoidable, as my creatinine levels dropped back to 2.1, my baseline for the last 7 years.

So, back onto the fluid restrictions, including being careful with eating water-filled foods. So long to big bowls soup, sweet tasty melons, and other goodies, like milk and cereal in the mornings.

All in all, I can’t complain, as weight loss and weight gain is completely within my control. The more I lose, the better I feel, so that’s an encouragement. And the better I feel, the more likely I am to stick to my diet and exercise routine.

But I still hate scales.
